Living out in the middle of the country also means having to share
space with any number of insects, especially when summer arrives. It’s just the
way it is and no amount of scrubbing will change that.
So, I did not bat an eyelash upon finding an extremely large
tree beetle – palmetto bug, tree roach, insect with wings – floating in my coffee
cup one morning when I did my one-eyed stagger into the kitchen.
Once upon a time, I would have shrieked, thrown the cup out the
door and scrubbed everything down with Lysol. Instead, I flipped it out in the
sink and prepared to spray it to death with said Lysol. It was unnecessary. The
bug slid out, attempted to crawl away and rolled over, legs straight up, dead.
I’m still disturbed by the incident.
I don’t normally leave coffee in the bottom of my cup.
That’s sacrilege.
